Full Departmental Review 

By conducting a thorough review of the existing legal department in your trust, we can advise you on recommendations for improvement and efficiency, which can lead to costs savings in the long term if they are sustained. Along with these higher-level recommendations, we can advise on improving relationships within the trust (between clinicians and the legal services team) and also external relationships, with the Coroner for example.

Through our experience, we know all too well that in a majority of trusts, the legal teams are under-resourced and resistant to change. We hope to change that, or at least start the process of change. 

HLC will thoroughly analyse your legal department and advise on areas of improvement. The goal – to create an optimum functioning department that is well respected and saves money. We aim to advise on changes that will make at least a 20% cost saving within a year or two.

The review will focus on:

 

  • Team structure and job descriptions

  • Team performance

  • Current administrative processes

  • External panel spend 

  • Relationships internally within trust (divisions, governance team, execs, doctors and nurses) 

  • Relationships externally (e.g. coroner, panel, NHSR) 

  • Reporting methods and quality of reports

  • GIRFT reviews 

  • NHSR scorecard analysis.

Our report will cover the following recommendations:

  • Urgent and non-urgent departmental changes

  • Urgent and non-urgent changes (external to the department) 

  • Suggestions for cost saving exercises as an effort to make at least a 20% saving in external legal spend

  • Recommendations on any gaps in skill set with the existing team and suggestions for development/training or additional recruitment. 

  • Administrative/software changes needed to improve efficiency

  • New or amended SOP’s and KPI’s for the department

  • Improvements or changes to Datix/InPhase pages to enable enhanced data capture

  • GIRFT analysis recommendations

  • Coronial relationship improvement. 

Our review could take anything from 2-4 weeks depending on a variety of factors. We will need to be on site for most of it and will need access to staff within the department and external to the department.
